History of the Clear Lake Falcon Flairs

By 1972-1973 First year Flair, Sr. Lt. Mary Lou "Mager" Johnson

In May of 1972, the first try outs were held for the Inaugural group of the Clear Lake High School Drill team. Many members had previously been Clear Creek Cavaliers, so we had some experience under our belt. Line members were chosen composed of sophomores, juniors and seniors. The first group of officers were Jr. Lt.'s Lauri Lawder, and Nancy Swennes, Sr. Lt.'s Pam Greaney and Mary Lou Mager, and Captain Eva Depperschmidt. During the summer, the drill team attended American Drill Team School at SMU without a team name or uniform. Even though we were a brand new team, we were able to achieve all 2nd place trophies in each division. We were very proud to receive the first trophies for CLHS. Many of the girls will remember we danced and high kicked for many hours and the marching classes were often very physically demanding in the summer heat.

Our director, Patti Diehl Owens, came to practice one day with some team name ideas - and the "Falcon Flairs" seemed to fit the bill. We loved the definition of the word flair, "having the knack or ability to do something great"... and we knew that great things were ahead of us. So we practiced on the breezeway with red tennis style outfits and started the first practices and performances of the Clear Lake Falcon Flairs. Until this time most drill teams uniforms were hand made by each individual member, and receiving professionally made uniforms was exciting! As our first Flair song states, as we were ready for our first football performance - we "Donned on our uniform, and proud we are to be, '73 Falcon Flairs that's me!"

Football season, basketball season, pep rallies, community performances, and our first competition at the "Tournament of Champions" went quickly by with each proud moment. Many of us will never forget our rendition of 'Up Up and Away' with helium balloons. Our first out of town trip was an invitation to perform at SMU Drill Team Day at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas. We were so excited to travel that we did not care if it was on school buses! We learned many new things, setting precedents and starting traditions that would be followed in upcoming years. The Clear Lake Falcon Flairs have now extended their performance venue with a Spring Show and dance ability that has been enhanced with the hiring of dance certified educators. Clear Lake High School was also the first school in CCISD to allow students to take dance classes under the Physical Education Department. Many members of the Fabulous Falcon Flairs through the years have continued to pursue dance and performance degrees with the skills and confidence they acquired from being in a program with a strong foundation.

A tradition was started in 1987, (referred to as Creek Week) whereas the Clear Lake Flairs and the Clear Creek Cavaliers perform together in a pre-game routine, before the Varsity game between the two schools. This traditon was started in an effort to unite the two schools and promote good sportsmanship. The Flairs and Cavaliers look forward to Creek Week each year, which includes a pre-game dinner hosted by both Booster Clubs.
